BTU’s Professional Development Department offers ESE courses teachers need throughout the year: “Accessible Literacy Framework” and “ESE Classroom Strategies” as well as courses tailored to ESPs and those focusing on eLearning.

BTU ESE Strategies (20pts)

 ESE Classroom Strategies (20 in-Service points) is to continue the work that has already been completed in the Advanced Level in a deeper fashion. Participants will be able to build consensus at the work site on the school improvement initiatives that will be promoted to present to the Faculty Council and/or School Improvement Team. The emphasis will be based on student achievement measurements that can be used to judge effectiveness in addition to standard test.

BTU A Closer Look at Autism (20 pts)

BTU A Closer Look at Autism (20 pts) will allow participants to have a better understanding regarding students who have autism. They will be able to change the way they educate and deal with their student’s social emotional and mental health needs utilizing the information learned via this course.

BTU Accessible Literacy Framework-ESE (20 pts)

Accessible Literacy Framework (ALF) (20 in-Service points) is an instructional framework designed to facilitate the literacy needs of individual students with complex communication needs. It is a research-based, systematic, student- driven approach to reading. ALF assesses goals developed for an individualized Education Plan (IEP), focus on teaching support for those goals, monitor student’s progress and adjusts lessons based on student performance. The ALF framework provides practitioners (any special education teacher, general education teacher, and instructional support staff including Para- educators or instructional assistants or related service providers) with an instructional approach for a population who traditionally has not had access to literacy instruction.

Reading K-12 (38 pts)

Reading Comprehension Instruction focuses on the research and exemplary practices that help students acquire strong reading comprehension skills. RCI is appropriate for all K-12 teachers and support staff who need to help increase their students’ comprehension of text—whether that text is a literature selection or informational text. The course provides participants with a synthesis of the research base on reading comprehension instruction and vocabulary development. Participants examine, discuss and evaluate the appropriate application of a range of instructional strategies from explicit to implicit teaching of comprehension skills. Strategies are presented for increasing student comprehension of both narrative and expository texts. In addition, participants learn how to help students self-monitor comprehension and apply appropriate “fix-up” strategies when comprehension is not achieved. Practice in using instructional strategies and examples of student work are embedded in the course
